Baseball Northwest Championship - August, 2009

The 11th annual 2009 Baseball Northwest Championship Tournament was held August 12th-16th at various locations around Portland, Oregon.  Baseball Northwest selected teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia, and Montana/Wyoming to competed in the tournament with ten teams in each class (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013).  The nearly 800 players were the largest collections of the region’s top players ever to be assembled in one place in the northwest.  Kentwood players who participated in this years tournament included: Matt Bell, Taylor Jones, Avery Kain, Cash McQuire, Reese McQuire, Craig Rainey, and Taylor White. 

The tournament kicked off Wednesday, August 12th, with a college recruiting seminar with information on college baseball recruiting, the professional draft and all the information players will need to know in selecting a college to attend.  The next day, Thursday, was a workout day for all players and teams with workouts specifically designed by college coaches and professional scouts.  All players took infield/outfield, batting practice and did SPARQ testing.  Friday, August 12th and Saturday, August 13th were round robin pool play in each class tournament (4 games for each team) and Sunday, August 16th were class championship and place games.  Games were played at top college and high school fields around the Portland area.

Players were invited in June and July to one day Prospect Games by recommendation to Baseball Northwest by professional scouts, college coaches, selected high school coaches, Baseball Northwest personnel and/or observation from “open” tryout camps.  Baseball Northwest’s 40 teams were selected for this tournament from State Prospect Game rosters.  Invitations for the Northwest Championship Tournament went out to players after the State Prospect Games.

Over 200 college recruiters and professional scouts attended the event (including State Prospect Games) from all over the country.  The Northwest Championships drew the largest collection of college coaches and professional scouts ever to observe an amateur baseball event in the Northwest.
